Eastern Townships
Cowansville is located in Quebec's Eastern Townships, the beautiful countryside and the rolling Appalachian Mountains just an hour from Montreal situated between the Saint Lawrence River and the United States border. The area is surrounded with charming Loyalist-era villages, fantastic food and wine, picturesque rivers, lakes, ski hills and vibrant culture.
Cowansville
Cowansville is located on Lac Davignon in south-central Quebec, Canada, 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of the Vertmont U.S. border. It is the seat of Brome-Missisquoi, a regional county municipality. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 12,489.
Jacob Ruiter first settled on the current site of Cowansville, in 1800 he built a flour mill, and then a saw mill. In 1805, Ruiter named the small town as Nelsonville, in honour of British admiral, Lord Horatio Nelson. The city's current name is due to Peter Cowan, a merchant from Montreal who settled in the area in 1836 and become postmaster in 1841. In order to avoid the mail being sent inadvertently to another city named Nelsonville, close to Hamilton in Upper Canada, he decided to change its name. Cowansville is the seat of the judicial district of Bedford, the main economy is based on the industrial sector, the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins hospital, a municipal court and a federal penitentiary.
La Route des vins
Located 40 minutes east of Montreal, The Brome-Missisquoi Wine Route extends 140 kilometers in the Eastern Townships. It links 20 wineries, including some of the oldest in Quebec, and produces 60% of Quebec’s local wine.
The towns and villages of the Eastern Townships
The Eastern Townships features old-world charm thanks to architecture influenced by American, Loyalist, Scottish, and Irish founders. In 1881 George Nesbitt built this Empire Style home for his family in Cowansville.
